After the late night, Emma opted for an extra dose of coffee instead of a run or yoga. Mrs. Kellerly hadn’t made an appearance, leaving Emma to her solitude and what she’d hoped would be an easy morning routine.

Oren, however, had other plans. Not that she objected in the slightest when he called her between his first and second classes of the day.

“Emma, hi. Hope I’m not waking you.”

She was still groggy but got a charge from Oren’s voice in her ear. “No, not at all. I’ve been awake for…okay, I’ve been awake for all of twenty minutes. And I’m already on my second cup of coffee. Thank the heavens for latte pods and automatic timers.”

Oren laughed, and the sound sent ripples through Emma’s stomach. She could imagine him greeting his students, wearing his loose-fitting yoga pants and his not-so-loose-fitting tank top as he stretched into a pose.

“Hey, Oren, I’d love to talk. I mean it, seriously. Just…now’s not great. I still have to shower, and I need to be in the office in about twenty minutes.”

“That’s fine. Totally fine. I just wanted to hear your voice and know that you’re doing okay this morning. I’d hoped you would be here, but I understand your schedule isn’t always a forgiving one. Maybe tomorrow?”

“Yes!” She hadn’t intended to shout, but it happened anyway. “I mean, yes. Yes, I’ll be in class tomorrow. Maybe not your early-early class, but I can try for the six-thirty one. I’ll be there.”

He laughed again. “Okay. That’d be lovely. I’ll see you then. I’m looking forward to it.”

They said their farewells, and Emma held the phone to her ear for a moment after the call disconnected, as if Oren’s laughter might still be echoing through the airwaves.

After downing her second latte, she raced through getting ready and was out the door before a quarter to seven. Jacinda wanted her—and Mia and Sloan—at the office by seven thirty for a debrief, but Emma planned on being there even earlier. She’d show her SSA her devotion to tracking down their gun-toting religious nut by being at her desk and hunting down leads before anyone else arrived.

If nothing else, she could get started checking in with the local cops, making sure there hadn’t been any action at the mosque overnight. Or any more tags found at other locations.

But we deserve an early break on a case, Emma girl. Nothing the matter with catching a guy before he can cause more damage.

When she got downstairs, she braced herself for the cold February air. Spring couldn’t come fast enough. Through the lobby window of the complex, though, she glimpsed a white-eyed woman in red, lingering along the edge of the parking lot. Her dress all but shined against the cloudy morning, with the sun only beginning to fight off the fog. But with those white eyes against her shiny black skin, she couldn’t be mistaken for one of the living.

“So much for starting the day without a visit from the Other. Fantastic.
